Sexual Abuse of Older Adults in Long-Term Care

Research shows that care providers have an important role to play in preventing the sexual abuse of older adults, particularly abuse by intimate partners and other family members.

Join EAO, as we continue with our lunch and learn webinar series, to learn more about how to recognize, prevent and respond to situations of sexual abuse of older adults.

SPEAKER:

Tammy Rankin, Senior Safety Advisor,
Regional Municipality of Durham, Long Term Care & Services for Seniors Division

Tammy is a graduate of McMaster University Gerontology program and has been working with seniors as a social service worker for the past 30 years with the focus on Long Term Care. In her current role she partners with Durham Regional Police addressing abuse in care settings and the community.

The webinar will:

  • Provide participants with an overview of sexual abuse of older adults;
  • Discuss the indicators, risk factors, and barriers to disclosures;
  • Outline how to build a therapeutic relationship with survivors;
  • Provide practical strategies and assessment tools for service providers who work with older adults; and
  • Highlight current legislation and available provincial resources.
