Facts about the Flu and Flu Vaccine

  • Vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body, providing protection against infection with the viruses in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects againsts the viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season.
  • Symptoms of the flu include high fever, runny nose, coughing, body aches and weakness.
  • Why is it important? Regular vaccines not only ensure you are safe against the latest strains of flu, but also help protect people who are vulnerable to sickness or aren't able to get vaccinated due to health reasons.
  • The Center for Disease Control recommends annual vaccines for people ages 6 months and older.
  • Peak flu season is December through March, so the CDC recommends vaccinations by the end of October.
  • Does the flu vaccine have any risks or side effects? You cannot get the flu from a flu vaccination. These shots are made from inactivated viruses that cannot transmit disease. Usually patients experience mild discomfort at the injection site.
  • Healthy tips to avoid the flu (in addition to getting vaccinated): Always try to avoid contact with those who are sick. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Sneeze into your elbow to avoid spreading disease. Stay home for 24 hours until fever-free if symptomatic

Help keep St. John's a healthy place this flu season.
