Since the first time a moving image was married to a soundtrack, maintaining sync between the two posed a challenge at every step, including acquisition, production, distribution and consumption. The implementation of the vast number of digital systems within the media ecosystem has increased this challenge significantly.
Please join guest speaker Paul Briscoe of Harris Broadcast for a look at A-V synchronization related issues and an overview of the work underway within SMPTE to establish a standard which could solve the issue. This webcast will discuss the nature and causes of A-V sync problems, and explain, in detail, how the toolset in the proposed SMPTE Standard supports lip-sync for both live and file-based workflows, and holds the potential to provide utility through to the point of consumption.
Guest Speaker: Paul Briscoe, Harris Broadcast
Paul has worked with Harris Broadcast (formerly Leitch Technology) for almost 20 years as Product Developer, Project Group Leader, Engineering Manager and currently as Manager of Strategic Engineering, with a focus on Standards and Interoperability, in addition to chairing the Patent Committee. Prior to joining Leitch, Paul worked for 14 years at CBC Engineering, specializing in editing, CGI, plant systems and emerging technologies, the latter during the Toronto Broadcast Center development project.
He is very active in the SMPTE, both in the Toronto Section as presenter, Manager, Secretary-Treasurer and currently Chair, as well as an active participant in various standards committees, including chairmanship of the 24TB-01 LipSync Ad-Hoc group. He currently has several patents applied for and granted, is a member of IEEE and SMPTE and has been a licensed radio amateur since 1974.
