During 2017, Federal defense contractors have become increasingly aware of DFARS 252.204-7012 “Safeguarding Covered Defense Information and Cyber Incident Reporting,” in part due to the fact that the ruling requires contractors to implement certain control requirements by no later than December 31, 2017. In addition, as its title implies, the ruling also includes cybersecurity incident reporting requirements where contractors must report incidents within 72 hours of discovery to the Government.
While the requirements of this ruling may seem complex and costly to implement for many small and medium-sized contractors, it is imperative that contractors fully understand the basic elements of DFARS 252.204-7012 before considering next steps.
