Peter McGoeyPeter McGoey, MFT, has spent over 30 years providing counseling and support to Santa Barbara’s drug and alcohol recovery community.

Since 1979, Peter has worked at Santa Barbara’s Cottage Hospital and is currently the Primary Counselor for the Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program (COPE).

Peter was integral in expanding Cottage’s Outpatient Program to include mental health and dual diagnosis groups. For 10 years Peter has been a member of Cottage Hospital’s Substance Use Evaluation Team, providing assessment, support, and referrals to trauma patients

In addition to his work in the hospital setting, Peter has trained, supervised, and mentored many of Santa Barbara’s drug and alcohol recovery counselors and licensed clinicians.

Peter continues to provide advanced training and clinical supervision on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders and substance dependency. Peter provides supervision for the Sheriff’s Treatment Program counseling staff in the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Peter has been an adjunct faculty member at UCSB Extension, Santa Barbara City College, and Antioch University. He has provided exceptional educational leadership in Alcohol and Drug Treatment, Clinical Skills, and Group Psychotherapy.

In addition to his role as an instructor, Peter has also served as a counselor, basketball coach, and mentor to students at Santa Barbara City College for 20 years.

Peter has a Masters in Psychology in addition to a Masters in Social Science and a Secondary Teaching Credential. He has been greatly influenced by his Catholic and spiritual mentors and a wide support system. He utilizes Centering Prayer and other meditation practices for strength, growth, and self care. He is currently being trained as a  Centering Prayer teacher.

Peter has a sister, Mary, with whom he shares a keen interest in UCLA athletics as well as any books written by or about Coach John Wooden. He has completed five LA Marathons and three Seattle to Portland (STP) two-day bike rides since 1990. He is a devoted godfather and adopted “uncle” to countless young people. Peter’s influence on the lives of Santa Barbara residents stretches far beyond his work as an MFT.
