Creating Positive Emotions:

A Foundation for Learning, Intrinsic Motivation, and Resilience

What factors serve as the foundation for students, especially those who have struggled in school, to be more motivated to learn, to deal more effectively with setbacks and obstacles, and to become more hopeful and resilient?  In his presentation Dr. Brooks will discuss the power of positive emotions to create what he calls a "motivating environment."  He will describe strategies based on a strength-based approach that serve to (a) reinforce each student's "islands of competence," (b) nurture the main components of motivation and resilience, and (c) promote learning, caring, and responsibility.
