Positive Youth Development & Trauma-informed Classrooms
This session will empower participants to use a “trauma-lens” to inform and strengthen best educational practices and approaches to classroom management, behavior management, active participation, and engagement.

4-Hour Professional Development:

Earn a CUNY Certificate of Completion and CTLE Credit for Professional and Level III Teaching Assistant certificate holders.

The concept of “trauma-informed” care has evolved over the last three decades and the applicability varies across different settings and sectors. Because so much early research focused on the aftermath of traumatic events and experiences and how to help people negatively impacted heal and recover, many believe trauma-informed care is the sole purview of psychologists, clinicians, and social workers. This workshop will refute that myth.

This session will empower educators to use a “trauma-lens” to inform and strengthen best educational practices and approaches to classroom management, behavior management, active participation and engagement. Participants will gain a basic understanding of what trauma is and ways to identify and address it in your classroom (or learning community).

The workshop will unpack:

  • The ten foundational principles of trauma-informed practice.
  • Five core values that guide trauma-informed care, established by US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Center for Trauma-Informed Care (NCTIC).
  • Evidenced based practices and strategies to help create safer, caring, empathetic, and empowering learning spaces for all learners.
  • How to make the material accessible and relevant to participants' daily work.

Who should attend?
This session is open to educators and practitioners of all age groups.

Led by Erika L. Ewing, Engagement Strategist and Project Director for the Young Adult Literacy Technical Assistance Program. Coffee and tea provided.

What our participants are saying about Professional Development sessions at CAT:

“I was thinking, 'It’s the end of a long school year, do I really want to attend a professional development workshop?'
So glad I did, it was the perfect way to end the year.”
