We Have Puppets, Now What?

Moving Puppets Off the Shelf and Into Action in the Classroom

4-Hour Professional Development Session:
Earn a CUNY Certificate of Completion and CTLE Credit for Professional and Le
vel III Teaching Assistant certificate holders.

Puppets are a wonderful tool for early childhood educators, but can quickly become a distraction without practical training. This session will give educators hands-on experience in using puppetry as an interactive tool for learning. Participants will learn the basics of manipulating different styles of hand puppets, practice strategies for introducing puppets into their classroom, and explore the benefits of using puppets to support literacy and social-emotional skills.

What can I expect to gain from this workshop?
  • Basic skills needed to be an effective puppeteer
  • Practice with tools to engage students while puppeteering
  • Materials and time to create an original puppet to take home

Who should attend? Educators and early childhood practitioners interested in exploring alternate outlets for engaging their students.

Led by Helen Wheelock, Director of the Early Learning Program. Light refreshments provided.

What our participants are saying about Professional Development sessions at CAT:

“I now have skills to use puppets “as a classroom management tool. As a literacy tool. As a socio-emotional tool (describing feelings). Cannot wait to share with my students who are shy and timid to talk with one another.” (2018 Participant)

“To be honest, with [Facilitator 1] and [Facilitator 2], I learn more in 5 minutes than I do at [other professional developments] for 2 hours… You guys actually make an impact! So far, it seems the administration is very pleased with the improvement of my one to one student. The storytelling, and beforehand the puppets,  just fantastic  tools, and the counselor has seen a boy who acted ' like a baby', hugging, freezing up, etc., not a word from him… Now, he’s turned into a productive wonderful student. It's my second year with him. The counselor and I work out a behavior program that features all the tools learned at CAT. I can’t thank you enough!” (Teacher’s Assistant, recurring CAT PD attendee)
