Thinking of giving up Alcohol for January? We can help!

Study title: Dry January - Healthy Volunteers 1 month Alcohol Abstention

We are looking for volunteers to assess health changes after one month of not drinking alcohol.

We would like to invite you to take part in a study taking place at the Royal Free Hospital. We are investigating the health benefits of 1 month without alcohol in people who are healthy, but drink quite regularly.

Who are we?

We are liver doctors who work at the Royal Free Hospital in London. The lead doctor for this study is Professor Kevin Moore.

What do we know about this already?

There is not much research on this subject, but a small study suggested that there may be health benefits, including a lower risk of diabetes, improved sleep and productivity (New Scientist Jan 2014). We want to expand this study to see if these observations are true and try to get a better understanding of what is happening.

What would it involve for you?

If you are interested, please click the link below for more detailed information about the study and to book an appointment to come to see us at the Royal Free Hospital. At this appointment, you would have a:

  1. Liver scan - painless, radiation-free, to measure the fat and stiffness of the liver (similar to a prenatal ultrasound scan).
  2. Blood test and questionnaires looking at general health and well-being.
  3. You would then be abstinent for 1 month

 After a month:

  1. Arrange another appointment
  2. Repeat the liver scan, blood test and questionnaires.

We will then let you know of any changes we can see between the two visits. Finally, we would e-mail you a questionnaire 1 month after the second visit to see how you were getting on and whether you had started drinking alcohol again or if anything had changed since finishing Dry January.

Once we finish the analysis, the full results will be e-mail to you.

ALL DATA AND INFORMATION WILL BE KEPT STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

Yours sincerely,

Professor Kevin Moore, Dr Stewart Macdonald and Dr Gautam Mehta
