YogaCity NYC Deeper Learning Series

Friday, September 19th at Laughing Lotus, 4:00-5:30pm

5 Senior Teachers Reflect on the Current State of Affairs

How to Open the Practice to More People

with Dana Flynn, Jyll Hubbard-Salk, Will Duprey, Megan Garcia and Leslie Booker

According to research, about 20% of all Americans practiced yoga in the past 12 months. But look around any yoga studio and most of the students are fit white females. While the yoga media reinforces this reality, teachers and studios need to diversify in order to include the rest of the country in this valuable practice.

How do we, as leaders in the NYC yoga community, do this in ways that are inviting and successful? We live in a city, known as the “melting pot” where over 800 languages are spoken and that multi culturalism is just not represented in our studios.

Deeper Learning Series

This Deeper Learning panel discussion is part of YogaCity NYC’s commitment to open serious dialogue between diverse schools of yoga in New York City, foster growth, greater understanding and community. The series, led by moderator Brette Popper is held at rotating studios to give students a chance to visit places they may not be acquainted with.

This discussion is FREE, open to all and intended to explore issues of race, age, size and gender.

Our panelists will talk about how they have personally overcome the obstacles of prejudice as well as how to invite a broader range of students into the yoga community.

Members of the audience should be prepared with questions because the second part of the event is dedicated to an open discussion. This program is free, but seating is limited and advance registration is suggested.
