In the study and practice of Chinese medicine, acupuncturists are often not aware that they are utilizing herbs differently than when the herbs were first being used and cultivated and that use was based on the historical context of the time. While a practitioner today may use a classical formula, often the properties and functions of the herbs are described within the context of modern times.
The intention of this class is to familiarize practitioners with the different thought processes associated with significant periods of Chinese history and how such historical times impacted the development of the material medica (Bencao).
In this three-day class, Jeffrey Yuen will survey the Tang Dynasty for its impact on specific Chinese medical modalities while taking into consideration the political, social, and economic factors of this time period. The Tang Dynasty was a golden period in Chinese history and development characterized by reform, innovation and advancements with a pervading spirit of intellectual exploration that had a significant impact on the development of Chinese Medicine. We will explore the energetics of herbs and their common applications from this perspective so that today we may better understand the intentions and legacy of Tang Dynasty herbal medicine.
