The Upper Orifices (ear, eye, nose, mouth and tongue), are doorways opening on the exterior of our bodies allowing perception.

They depend on the heart, master of mind and life, and the heart is responsible for the discernment present in each of these sense organs. With the upper orifices as its servants and messengers the heart is in charge of the entirety of the relationship between the center of one’s life and the periphery. This relationship illustrates the connection between emotions and passions.

Each upper orifice depends on a specific organ for nurturing and balance. This means that any thought, action or feelings that disturbs a Zang organ can also disturb its orifice and each Zang organ participates in building and nurturing the sense organs. Awareness of the relationship of the brain and its connection to the sensory orifices is essential.

All the pathways must be taken into account, including Primary and Eight Extraordinary Meridians, and Luo and Divergent pathways.
We will study these orifices as a group and then examine each individually. We will explore the sensory organ and their relation to Five Element theory, but also other organs and body functions that create patterns related to pathology.

This study is based on the classical texts of medicine, most especially the Neijing and Nanjing with their commentaries.
