1040 Tax Update: Even without tax reform, tax changes are in effect for the first time in 2017. Get the latest tax reform changes that apply to 2018 for planning purposes. Time is also set aside for MA DOR changes and updates. Everything that is different about the 2017 tax year filing season will be available. – 4 IRS CPE

1:00 PM-2:45 PM Schedule E, The Supplemental Income and Losses Form 2 CPE

Schedule E covers income and losses from rental real estate, royalties, partnerships, S corporations, estates, and trusts. This program will cover Part 1 real estate activities and royalty income. Included in the presentation is what determines Schedule E income from Schedule C in an e-sharing economy, rental loss limitations, special rules on vacation and family occupied properties.

3:00 PM-4:45 PM Schedule C: From straightforward to Convoluted, 2 CPE

Sole proprietors, statutory employees, and single-member LLC members are among those required to file Schedule C with their personal tax returns. This course will cover the basics of accounting methods, cost of goods sold, expenses, and record-keeping requirements. It will then address more complex areas such as spousal partnerships, automotive expenses, employee wages and payroll taxes, employee benefits, pension plans, insurance, SE tax, and more. What belongs on Schedule C, and what must instead be reported on Form 1040 (SEHI, SEP, SIMPLE) will be covered. Wage credits, depreciation recapture including SE implications, business use of home, start-up costs, and employing children will be explained."

Our Speakers

1040 Tax Update

Terry Anderson, EA, MST, received her EA in 2001 and her MST in 2009. She has been teaching modules of the SEE review course administered by the MASEA for over 10 years; specifically part 2 - sole proprietors, partnerships, corporations, non-profits, and estate and trust taxation. Prior to that she taught an introductory tax course for H&R Block as well as advanced courses. She is currently a member of the MaSEA education committee. She presents on various tax topics at MaSEA meetings and at other venues. During the tax season, in addition to having her own tax practice, she is a tax expert for Intuit's Ask a Tax Expert program. 

Beth Logan, EA, has a tax practice and consulting company in Chelmsford. She focuses on helping individuals and small businesses. She teaches tax classes to lay persons at various venues. In the lulls between tax seasons, she researches tax topics including attending BitCoin conferences, dialoguing with EAs in states with medical marijuana, discussing annuities with financial planners, and much more. She has authored several EA Journal articles and written multiple tax publications. Her other work time is spent helping small businesses grow as a management consultant and advising on financial decisions which can impact their taxes. For several years she was the Voice of the Valley hosting a tax program on WCAP radio in Lowell. She has an MBA from the University of Maryland and two engineering degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Schedule E

Scott Franklin, EA has a law degree from UMichigan and mortgage loan experience. He has a tax practice in Wellesley. Scott is extremely proficient with the tax issues of stock options, small business and rental property taxes. He provides elder care tax services that encompass gifting, trusts and estate planning. He also is a fine furniture maker.

John Pearson, EA has 25 years experience in the financial services industry.  As an Enrolled Agent, John is licensed to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service. John has an MBA from Northeastern University.  He has been preparing taxes professionally since 2006. John prides himself on resolving complex tax situations and explaining tax law in plain English.

Schedule C:

Catherine G. White, EA earned an engineering degree from MIT. Growing up with an accountant for a father, she put herself through college working as a bookkeeper.  She has owned her own tax and accounting practice for twenty years. She became a "money engineer" and then earned in 2004 her EA certification. Catherine has a passion for study and discussion of the US Constitution.  Her articles and videos are available at www.constitutiondecoded.com.

Geetu Wallecha, EA brings her excellent communication, interpersonal skills and financial planning experience to this program. She practiced as a financial planner at Mintz Levin Financial Planners and enrolled agent at Taxes Plus. Prior to that Geetu taught economics at SRCC college Delhi University for 5 years. She is a member of NATP, NAEA and MaSEA.
