Synopsis: Since DSM-5, selective mutism (SM) is classified among anxiety disorders, and many children with SM fully fulfill the criteria for Social Phobia (SP) as well. It has been discussed whether SM solely constitutes an extreme form of SP or a distinct entity. Dr. Schwenck will give an overview of actual research about phenomenological overlaps and also differences between the two disorders. With the help of data from behavioral and peripheral physiological data we will demonstrate that beyond large similarities there is also evidence for differences between the disorders. Scientific as well as practical implications will be derived from these results and discussed against the scientific background.
Biography: Dr. Schwenck is a Professor for Special Needs Educational and Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology at the University of Giessen, Germany. She studied psychology at the Universities of Wuerzburg (Germany) and Madrid (Spain), trained in child and adolescent psychotherapy (specification behavioral therapy) at the University of Marburg and did a PhD at the department of Developmental Psychology at the University of Wuerzburg. Her research mainly focuses on children and adolescents with conduct problems with and without callous-unemotional traits, selective mutism and social anxiety disorder and children of parents with mental illness.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to summarize the large epidemiological overlap between SM and SP
- Participants will be able to state two differences between SM and SP, regarding comorbidity profile and feared situations.
- Participants will be able to state two implications for differential treatment interventions for children who have SM with and without SP.
