Course Description and Objectives: The 30-minute online program will look at five lessons, best practices or strategies from recent college sports investigations Buckner has handled or which were prominent in the media that can be applied to other sports organizations, leagues and team or corporate clients.

I. Introduction and presentation overview.
II. Lesson 1: Internal investigation policies.
a. Implement a written policy regarding reporting and investigating allegations.
b. Follow the policy consistently regardless of position, gender and other characteristics to reduce legal liability (i.e., charges of discrimination).
III. Lesson 2: Organization, comprehensive and corroboration.
a. Prepare an investigation plan.
b. Maintain an organized file (e.g., secure electronic file, Bates stamping).
c. Conduct a comprehensive investigation, including interview all pertinent individuals with knowledge.
d. Ensure evidence supporting and refuting the allegations are located, reviewed and tested.
IV. Lesson 3: Law enforcement and regulatory agencies can be your friend.
a. Identify all issues involved in the investigation that other agencies may have jurisdiction.
b. Consider protocol and regulations on self-disclosing/coordinating investigation of issues.
V. Lesson 4: Prepare for surprises.
a. Review all issues in the investigation to identify possible contingencies.
b. Prepare outlines for common legal and other issues that may occur during an interview (e.g., sexual harassment, criminal allegations, other regulatory topics).
VI. Lesson 5: Creativity.
a. Use creative methods and techniques to collect relevant evidence.
