Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RtI) models are being adopted and implemented at schools throughout Maryland and across the U.S. This workshop will provide participants with frameworks and practical ideas for ensuring these models promote an inclusive educational experience for students with intensive support needs.
Participants will gain insights and learn new approaches to a variety of topics, from active engagement in Tier 1 with Common Core State Standards to monitoring progress and documenting learning of general curriculum. Examples will highlight students who participate in the alternate assessment.
Michael McSheehan is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences & Disorders and a project director with the National Center for Inclusive Education at the University of New Hampshire's Institute on Disability/UCED. Michael works on a variety of state and federally funded initiatives to advance research, policy, and practice in inclusive education, alternate assessment, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), autism spectrum disorders, and Response to Intervention (RtI). Michael recently completed a five year project with nine elementary schools and five school districts to develop and implement an RtI model that blends literacy and behavioral supports.
