8:30 Pruning Trees: a Systems Approach (AKA Tree Preservation Strategies)

You’ve been asked to prune a particular group of trees but you are not sure where to start. We will show you how to develop an easy-to-use system of pruning trees of any age that is simple to teach to customers and staff. Whether it’s a tree with a one-inch trunk diameter or four foot diameter, the strategies are similar. Experienced arborists, landscapers, and beginners alike will come away with a fresh, new perspective on pruning trees for longevity – Guaranteed! There will be many photographic and video examples of pruning trees in many different climates and situations. You will know that there is more to mature tree care than thinning!

10:15 Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad “Z”: De-mystifying the Z133.1 for the Tree Worker and the Observer

Our safety standard, the Z133.1, can be hard to understand, is misunderstood, and even be hated. Arborists and tree workers have a life and death obligation to follow the standard, but the observer - those that hire, subcontract, refer, manage, employ, and watch - must share this obligation and know the standard as well. This class will bring the “Z” to life in a practical and down to earth way for both the tree worker and the observer.

The ANSI A300 and ISA Best Management Practices are the guides for installing supplemental support systems in trees, but it can be overwhelming to figure out on your own. Chris will walk you through each step of identifying structural problems, evaluating mitigation options, installing various supplemental support systems, and required maintenance. This presentation will also cover some of the tips, tricks, and pitfalls related to cabling, bracing, propping, and guying.

12:45 Restoring Shade Trees to Dignity Following Storms

Pruning storm damaged trees dramatically improves structure and reduces risk. We will show how to clean, and then manage sprouts back into acceptable branch structure by pruning the correct branches. This session covers basics and enough detail to begin making better choices tomorrow.
1:45 – 4:30 Outdoor exercises: rotate between 3 sessions

Session A: Practical applications of the “Z”. Building on the indoor lecture we will see how easy and practical it can be to use the Z133.1 standard to safely move and work in trees.
Session B: Risk Assessment & Supplemental Support Demonstration. Get up close and personal with the procedures, tools, and equipment used for risk assessment and supplemental support systems installation.
Session C: Pruning strategies. Some of the techniques described in the morning will be demonstrated in the field. Focus will be on strategies designed to preserve trees rather than remove them. Hardhats and eye protection will be required to stand close to the work site.

OUR EXPERTS
Dr. Ed Gilman, UF Professor EmeritisDr. Gilman was on the faculty since 1984 as professor in the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He received honorary membership in ASLA in 2016. Ed wrote “Illustrated Guide to Pruning” (its third edition printed in 2012) as well as five other books. He received the Authors Citation Award in 1999, the Educators Award in 2003, the research award in 2007, and the Award of Merit (ISAs highest award) in 2016 from the International Society of Arboriculture. He has published more than 120 scientific peer reviewed journal articles on roots, planting, and pruning trees in his 35 years in academia and industry. Ed has conducted more than 800 presentations to professional groups throughout his career.
Rob Calley, BCMA
Rob Calley is a Board Certified Master Arborist. In addition to BCMA, he holds the TCIA Certified Tree Care Safety Professional credential and the ISA Tree Risk Assessor Qualification. Rob is a TCIA certified instructor for aerial rescue, chainsaw safety, and chipper safety. He has received three ASTI grants to teach chainsaw safety and aerial rescue and has taught at several AUFA events and FLTCC outdoor schools. Rob is the climber representative on the ISA Florida Chapter’s Board of Directors. He practices arboriculture as a small tree care company owner.
Chris Francis, BCMA
Chris Francis is a Board Certified Master Arborist. He holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification and is Alabama State Licensed in Tree Surgery, Landscape Design, Setting of Landscape Plants, and Ornamental & Turf Pest Control Supervisor. He also has obtained the ALNLA Certified Landscape Professional and AUFA Urban Forestry Certification. He has made presentations on various topics of arboriculture throughout the southeastern United States. He currently serves on the council for the Alabama Urban Forestry Association. Chris is the consulting arborist and owner at Chris Francis Tree Care in Daphne, Alabama.
