We start our seminar with a review of palm ID basics and palm classification. This session will also teach you how to identify some of the more common palms encountered in Florida landscapes.

Buying and grading palms is both an art and science. Russell will teach you the key components of how palms are graded using the Florida Grades & Standards system as well as how to buy them.

Russell has had many years of experience planting and maintaining palms in Florida. In this session he imparts many lessons he has learned over those years so you can avoid repeating common mistakes.

OUR EXPERTS
Russell Adams has been growing palms in north Florida as a nurseryman since his arrival in 1983. He is a graduate of the University of Florida. He has collected cycad and palm seed in the Bahamas and Panama for Montgomery Botanical Center in Coral Gables. He is part of the Division of Plant Industries Palm sub-committee and helped develop the latest Grades and Standards for Palms and will be working on further revisions. Over the last 13 years, as a consultant to the Florida Department of Transportation, he has overseen the construction, establishment and maintenance of hundreds landscape projects throughout the state of Florida. Most of these projects included the planting and establishment of mature palms.
Dr. Brian Bahder, UF-IFAS Assistant Professor, specializes in insect vector ecology, specifically in vector discovery of new and emerging pathogens. These are pathogens that cause economic loss in agricultural and ornamental cropping systems. He also studies the evolutionary relationships and molecular mechanisms that determine the ability of species to transmit pathogens. His current research interests include the epidemiology of phytoplasmas infecting palms as well as other common tropical ornamental plants and their associated diseases and insect pests and developing management strategies to reduce economic losses.
Stephen Brown is the Horticulture Extension Agent with UF-IFAS Lee County Extension. His extension career has included soil science education, work with producers of cocoa and coffee products, marketing assistance to small farmers, organizing of master gardeners, professional training for arborists, pesticide applicators and landscape professionals. He has served in an extension capacity overseas and in both California and Florida. He now leads a staff of 14 providing a wide array of extension education services to professionals and the general public. Stephen has a B.S. in Soil Science and M.S. in Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition.
