8:30 – 10:00     Primary Growth in Trees
Dr. Les Werner, Professor, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Get back to basics. A review of primary growth, root and shoot apical meristems, including participant dissection of a twig.

10:00 – 10:30    Secondary Growth in Trees
Dr. Les Werner, Professor, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Roots and aboveground portions of the tree (vascular cambium and cork cambium) are dissected and analyzed and explained.

10:30 – 10:40     Break (divide into two groups for hands-on lab sessions)

10:40 – 12:00     Hands-On Wood Dissection, Morning Lab

    - LAB A: Dr. Les Werner will lead participants through a stem wood dissection with dissection lenses and dyes. 40 minutes.
    - LAB B: Dr. Andrew Koeser will lead participants through a dissection of root wood dissection lab with dissection lenses and dyes. 40 minutes.

12:45 – 1:30     Wounding and Compartmentalization in Trees

In this session we will take you well beyond CODIT. Students will Learn about trees response to wounding and compartmentalization on a microscopic level.

1:30 – 3:00     Woundwood Dissection Hands-on Lab, Afternoon Lab

    - LAB A: Dr. Les Werner will lead an examination of wound response and the anatomical differences between wound wood and normal wood. 40 minutes

3:30 – 4:30    The Life Story of A Tree
Dr. Les Werner, Professor, University of Wisconsin
Participants will examine the internal structure of the trunk of a tree and using information from the previous sessions, tell the story of that tree’s life.

OUR EXPERTS

Dr. Les Werner                                                                                       
A native of Wisconsin, Dr. Les Werner teaches Soils and Forestry at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. Les obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from UW - Stevens Point and his Ph.D from UW - Madison in 2008.  His research examines soil microbiology and how it is influenced by both natural and human induced changes in landscape environments.  Les has received numerous accommodations for his teaching and research while at UWSP from both students and the green industries.  Les’ goal is to make the soil live for all of his students regardless of age, so that they can manage their environments using what nature intended.                            

Dr. Andrew Koeser
Andrew Koeser is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Management at the University of Florida Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Hillsborough County. Prior to this position and his last stint in graduate school, Andrew worked at ISA Headquarters in Champaign, IL, working his way up to Science and Research Manager in his five years with the organization. Andrew is a Board Certified Master Arborist (IL-4920B). He is chair of the ISA Annual Conference Program Committee and a member at large on the ISA Science and Research Committee.
