The importance of transitions for those with autism cannot be stressed enough and doesn't happen overnight. The objective of this conference is to provide parents, advocates, professionals, and people with autism the opportunity to learn about resources and evidence-based best practices regarding planning and executing successful transitions.

8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
Pathways to Employment for Persons with Autism

The promise of full participation in the workforce has yet to be realized by the majority of young adults with ASD. Nevertheless, there have been studies that describe successful strategies that result in employment supports for individuals with ASD employment. Those strategies include enivornmental design, systematic instruction, the use of applied behavior analysis, and positive behavior supports. In this session, Dr. Schall will present the "nuts and bolts" regarding the implementation of supported and customized employment and internships while in high school through the use of these supports.

When All Else Fails: Beyond Behavioral Therapy

This presentation will discuss the use of medication as an adjunct to the behavioral treatment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The specific areas discussed will include inattention, mood issues including anxiety and depression, aggressive and self injurious behaviors and sleep.

One of the dreaded topics parents face throughout the school years are school transitions, when their child on the autism spectrum starts school, leaves elementary or middle school, and starts a new school. Research in this area will be discussed as well as how to make smooth transitions. The transition from high school to adulthood will also be discussed.

This presentation will provide an overview of the Project SEARCH program and how it prepares individuals with disabilities for competitive, integrated employment. Each available site in Mississippi will be discussed as well as requirements for participation. Specific examples of the benefits to individuals with Autism will be included throughout the presentation.
