BioTech 25: Proteomics: Principles and Methods
                                             (Formerly Bio-Trac 25)
Biotechnology Training Courses at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

This lecture and laboratory course will provide an introduction to proteomics technology. Both principles and advanced methodologies will be discussed with an emphasis on protein identification tools, shotgun sequencing and bioinformatics technologies.

Topics
The power of 2D electrophoresis: its advantages, applications and data analysis tools for the examination of the spots of interest; high-throughput mass spectrometric-based protein identification: spot excision, in situ proteolysis, extraction of the cleavage products from the gel matrix, peptide purification and concentration as well as mass spectrometric sample preparation and analysis; isotope-coded affinity tag methods to identify and quantify low-abundance and membrane proteins; multidimensional high performance liquid chromatography - capillary electrophoresis separation of a protein digest prior to mass spectrometry for identifying low abundance proteins from complex biological mixtures; protein arrays for gene expression and molecular interaction screening; novel algorithms for protein sequence alignment to generate protein identities from partial or complete databases; new systems for obtaining detailed functional information and large-scale classification of proteins; homology modeling for predicting the 3D details of biomolecules of unknown structure.

Academic Credit
Although no grades are given for BioTech Courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. Upon completion of this 5-day program, each participant will receive 3.5 CEUs. Upon completion of each workshop, a certificate is issued.

Refund Policy
1.  100% tuition refund is available for registrations cancelled 14 or more days prior to the start of the workshop.
2.  50% tuition refund is available for registrations cancelled between 4 to 13 days prior to the start of the workshop. Instead of a partial refund, you may elect to take a full workshop credit, which can be applied to another BioTech program of similar length.
3.  No refund is available for registrations cancelled 3 days or less prior to the start of the workshop.  A full workshop credit will be available to you, which can be applied to another BioTech program of similar length.
All cancellations must be received in writing via fax to the FAES office, Attn. Ms. Carline Coote; BioTech Registrar 301-402-0174 during normal business hours (8:30 – 4:30 EST).  Those received after hours are time marked for the following day.  In the case of situation numbers 2 or 3, you must indicate whether you are opting for the full credit alternative at the time of written cancellation. In both cases, all payments will be processed by the start of the initial workshop.
