Keynote Speakers
Dr. Clayborne Carson
In the morning keynote session, Dr. Carson will deliver an inspiring talk on King's Global Vision for Human Rights.
Dr. Clayborne Carson, world-renowned authority and author on Martin Luther King Jr., is the Director of The Martin Luther King Research and Education Institute at Stanford University and editor of The King Papers. Dr. Carson's extensive writings reflect not only his research about King but also his undergraduate civil rights and antiwar activism, which led him to appreciate the importance of grassroots political activity as well as visionary leadership in the African-American freedom struggle.
Rev. Deborah Lee Rev. Phil Lawson
Rev. Deborah Lee is the Director of the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, a program of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice-California. Since 1994, the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights has been a faithful voice, accompanying and advocating for the full participation and dignity of immigrants. Deborah has worked at the intersection of faith and social justice for over 20 years as an educator and organizer on issues of race, gender, a just economy, anti-militarism and immigration. Her work has consistently bridged different ethnic communities, generations, and geographies in creative and transformational processes. She is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.
Rev. Phillip Lawson recently retired as the Interfaith Program Director for East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO) and leads EBHO’s interfaith initiative, the Interfaith Action in Housing Program. EBHO is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to working with communities in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to expand affordable housing opportunities through education and advocacy. Under Rev. Lawson's leadership, EBHO has significantly expanded support of interfaith communities in their affordable housing efforts and expanded their capacity to address the housing crisis in the East Bay. . Before joining EBHO, Rev. Lawson was Pastor of Easter Hill United Methodist Church in Richmond from 1992 to 2003. Rev. Lawson served as Adjunct Professor at Starr King School of Ministry in Berkeley, CA until April, 2012. Rev. Lawson can be reached at (510) 741-7765 or through email at phillawson2@comcast.net
