A bit about Dr. Brett Goodwin Ph.D., Dean/Principal
In 1993, Dr. Goodwin earned a B.Arts.Sc. majoring in Biology from the interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences Program at McMaster University. In 2000, he earned a Ph.D. in landscape ecology and ecological modeling from Carleton University in Ottawa. From 2000 to 2003, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York. In 2003, Dr. Goodwin joined the Department of Biology at the University of North Dakota, whe re he earned tenure and promotion. At the University of North Dakota he took on a number of leadership roles including Chairing the Biology Department and playing leadership roles in University-wide service such as undergraduate curriculum review and institutional accreditation.
Dr. Goodwin’s primary research interests are in landscape and spatial ecology and he has studied such diverse topics as the spatial ecology of ticks and Lyme disease, gypsy moth population dynamics, and the influence of the surrounding landscape on the birds and insects on remnant prairie patches. He has extensive statistical training and has provided data analysis skills for various projects ranging from elk movement data to sports injuries in college athletes. He has published over 25 papers, given over 100 presentations at scientific meetings, and held multiple research grants. He has mentored multiple undergraduate and graduate students in research projects.
Over his career, Dr. Goodwin has taught primarily ecology and statistics courses. At the University of North Dakota, he took a leadership role in transforming undergraduate curriculum to a more active- and collaborative-learning pedagogy. This included helping get a 180 seat SCALE UP (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs) room on campus and providing the faculty development necessary for a successful transition into such an active-learning focused space.
Dr. Goodwin took on the Dean role for the School of Environmental and Natural Resources Sciences at the Frost campus of Fleming College in May, 2017. Since then he has been working with a diverse and dedicated group of faculty, technicians, and staff at this unique school focusing on career preparation and applied research in the environmental fields.
