Social Learning Model of the Development of Conduct Disorder

Communities and government stakeholders have debated the cause of anti-social, criminal behaviors in teenagers and young adults for generations. The arguments center around both the influences of and the remedies for the myriad of social issues that appear to influence the development of this problem. Research has demonstrated the development of this problem is less related to macro-level social ills, and more to the day-to-day interactions that our children have with their parents and guardians, extended family members, siblings, teachers, and eventually with their out-group peers. By studying the interactions of real families and real children in painstaking detail, The Social Learning Model of Anti-Social development (or Coercion Theory) was born out of the efforts of researchers like Gerald Patterson, a pioneer in the field of behavioral-based family treatment. Through interactions, smallgroup exercises, and didactic lecture, this course reviews the history and concepts of this research, applies the model to real-life cases, and presents a prescription for treatment that is both uncommon and optimistic.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Charles S. McLister joined Fairmount Behavioral Health System in October of 2009. Previously, he was a Divisional Director with Cornell Companies, Inc., managing the operations of multiple human service
facilities in a national market (1999-2008). He has spent 20 years as a clinician, supervisor, and senior manager, providing or supervising services such as drug and alcohol rehabilitation, treatment for specialized diagnoses, gender specific programming, alternative education, and behavior management services. Chuck has a Master of Applied Psychological Research degree from Penn State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Villanova University. He is also a Certified Alcohol and
Drug Counselor and a Certified Clinical Supervisor with the Pennsylvania Certification Board. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
