Winter 2018 Student Classes
Classes begin in January 2018! Register now before they fill up!
Register now for our student classes this winter. Choose from:
- Study Skills and Reading Comprehension, for grades 7-11
- Applied Grammar, for grades 6-10
- Academic Writing, for grades 7-11
- Reading Club, for kindergarten and first graders
Reading Club for New and Emerging Readers!
This class is designed for students in kindergarten and first grade.
Success in school starts with reading. Learning to read is hard work for children. Fortunately, research is now available that suggests how to give each child a good start in reading. Join us for a once per week, hour long class for students and a parent/guardian or trusted caregiver. 
Classes run from 4:30-5:30pm and are held at St. Luke's Espiscopal Church, 1884 22nd Street NW, Rochester.
First Grade Group meets six Mondays: January 8, 22, 29, February 5, 12, March 5.
Kindergarten Group meets six Wednesdays: January 10, 17, 24, 31, February 7, 14
Tuition of $150 covers the class for both parent/guardian and child. **If Rochester Public Schools is canceled for bad weather, Reading Club is automatically canceled, too. We will have make up days at the end of session if there are weather related closures.
Study Skills & Reading Comprehension, for grades 7-11

Writing Classes for Middle and High School Students

Writing I: Applied Grammar (grades 6-10)
Does your child need writing skills beyond emojis and LOL? Grammar is the first step to writing for school.
This class meets for 10 weeks on Tuesdays at The Reading Center from 3:45-5:15pm
Course dates are: Jan. 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27.
Course Description: The secret to brilliant writing is applying grammar! Come learn how to fashion phrases, structure sentences, and produce paragraphs, using eight treasured tools. In this course, students will learn to polish their writing by applying grammar, learning sentence structures and combining them. Finally, they will assemble a well-written paragraph.

Writing II: Academic Writing (grades 7-11)
Does your child have great ideas but difficulty with school writing assignments? If your student has taken a writing class with us before, they are ready to take this next course!
This class meets for 10 weeks on Fridays at The Reading Center from 3:45-5:15pm
Course dates are: Jan. 26, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, Mar. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30.
Course Description: In this course the student will learn strategies for academic summarization. The highest level of comprehension is to summarize what one has read. Using a variety of graphic organizers, the student will learn to identify organizational patterns of text and use the organizers to write a summary in their own words. Then, using the writing process, they will refine their pieces, applying grammar to their composition with specific nouns, vivid verbs and helpful descriptors.
Prerequisite: Applied Grammar or previous Reading Center Writing Class is a prerequisite to this course. You may take a pretest to see if you can test into this course.
Tuition of $275 includes writing notebook and a pre-screening meeting with the instructor.
Other Details for All Classes:
- Full payment for classes is due at the time of registration online, or within one week if paying by mail, to keep your student's place in the class. If you wish to set up a payment plan, please contact our bookkeeper, Gade Grinnell at 507-288-5271.
- Partial scholarships are available for qualified famiies on a first-come, first-served basis. See our website for a scholarship application.
- Each child requires a separate registration, and will receive a separate confirmation email.
- The Reading Center reserves the right to cancel (and refund tution) for classes if not enough registrations are received.
