Service Learning:  How to Engage Students and Maximize Learning

Accountability is the new standard for learning.

As all educators know, state as well as federal governments want to see learning outcomes measured by standardized test scores.

There is compelling evidence that service-learning is an effective strategy for improving academic learning.  But how can teachers set up rewarding and meaningful community partnerships?  How can they counteract student apathy toward course material that “doesn’t even matter in the real world?”

Service-learning has the potential to help students connect theory to practice and provide a much more complex understanding of course material.

At this webinar, a service-learning expert will provide guidelines for ensuring a successful program that will lead to a deeper understanding of course material.  You will emerge with new ideas, time-saving steps, and a passion for this unique way to connect theory and practice.

The success of service-learning programs has been lauded in charter and alternative schools but does not always get the recognition it deserves outside this sphere.

Yet research indicates that students who participate in service-learning activities show improvements in academic achievement and engagement, social skills, and demonstrate more positive attitudes and behaviors about civic engagement.

This webinar will help you inject new life into this underutilized learning tool.

In this 90-minute program including Q&A, you will explore:

  • How to distinguish service-learning from community service
  • Reasons why incorporating service-learning into a program facilitates learning for students and participants
  • Ways to create connections with the community to promote service-learning and child development
  • An actual example of a successful service-learning activity that promoted play for children and parents though a community Play Day

After this how-to webinar, you will have everything you need to incorporate service-learning into your program. You will know how to recognize and encourage hands-on, real-world learning activities, how to locate, create, and maintain community partnerships, and how to get your students motivated.

Who should register?   All educators, particularly those in FCS, child and human development, and parenting education; health professionals, community organizers, college or university professors, and anyone who wants to learn more about incorporating service-learning into a program or curriculum.
