Truss, Hoist, Rigging and Outdoor Structure Workshop - Ventura, CA - February 2018
Total Structures is excited to bring you the 2018 edition of the only industry training program focusing on the needs of the Outdoor Structures user. Held at our company headquarters in Ventura, CA from February 19th to the 23rd, the program will give participants a great refresher, or plenty of new information, before the start of the upcoming festival season.
This five day ETCP recognized workshop includes instruction and advice on the safe use of outdoor structures; design, inspection, and use of aluminum truss and towers; fundamentals of electric chain hoist design and operation with a focus on the entire line of Pointman electric chain hoists; and entertainment rigging principals and practices, including rigging math and proper rigging on ground support and temporary stage roof structures. All apropriate ANSI standards will be discussed throughout the course.
This is an ETCP approved training program and will provide qualified attendees with the maximum of 30 educational credits towards their rigging qualification renewal.
General Information
Course dates: Monday February 19th to Friday February 23rd, 2018.
Cost per attendee:
$1,495 if paid on or after December 15th 2017.
Early Registration Discount - $1295 if paid before December 15th 2017.
Sessions will begin at 9:00 AM and run until approximately 5:00 PM each day (except Friday when we intend to finish by 3 p.m. to help everyone with their travel home). Tuition includes unlimited snacks and refreshments throughout the day, as well as lunches, dinners and entertainment (as described below).
The cost of the course does not include local hotel accommodation. Attendees will receive a list of area hotels so they may book their own housing.
Local transportation between hotels, venue, restaurants, etc. will be provided as needed. Transportation from local airports to nearby hotels or the venue will be the attendee's responsibility. Course materials will be provided along with as much swag as we can throw at you!
Potential participants who have attended prior Total Structures' training events will find an updated syllabus being taught, as well as the usual industry networking opportunities.
The syllabus for the event will be as follows:
Day 1 - Truss and Structure Design and Inspection Principles
Taught by Elmer Veith, Sales Manager of Total Structures and Jeff Reder, of Clark-Reder Engineering. Day One will go over the history and evolution of truss in the entertainment industry, teach the fundamentals of aluminum truss design and use, and explain how to use manufacturer supplied load tables correctly. This class will also demonstrate how to visually inspect the product and document the inspection for continued safe use and good record keeping practice as per ANSI E1.2 - 2012 (Entertainment Technology — Design, Manufacture and Use of Aluminum Trusses and Towers).
Elmer has over twenty years of entertainment rigging industry experience. Before taking over sales and support for the Eastern US, Canada and the Caribbiean basin for Total Structures in 2006, Elmer was at Atlanta Rigging Systems for over seven years. During his time at ARS, Elmer established the sales division of the company as one of the leaders in the industry.
Day One will conclude with Factory Night at Total Structures' factory. The evening's entertainment will include dinner in the shop, a tour of the factory and a chance to try your hand at the various fabrication techniques used in the production of truss.
Day 2 - Outdoor Structure Engineering Principles and E1.21 Review and Compliance
Taught by Jeff Reder, Principal and Partner in Clark-Reder Engineering, this day will explain the process of structurally engineering a temporary outdoor structure, provide guidance on how to read such reports as well as help the attendees develop and perfect important operational documentation such as operating manuals, high wind speed action plans, etc.
Jeff is a principal and founder of Clark-Reder, a full service consulting engineering firm based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jeff, business partner Daniel Clark, and their staff are presently licensed in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the District of Columbia. They are highly experienced in the design and use of both aluminum and steel outdoor stage roof and ground support systems.
Day Two will also go into the details and requirements of ANSI E1.21 - 2013 (Entertainment Technology — Temporary Structures Used for Technical Production of Outdoor Entertainment Events) and ANSI E1.2 - 2012 (Entertainment Technology — Design, Manufacture and Use of Aluminum Trusses and Towers).
Dinner will be provided at a local restaurant on the evening of Day 2.
Day 3 & 4 - Entertainment Rigging Principles
Ethan Gilson will lead two days of instruction covering rigging principles, terms, hardware, safety, and rigging math. This class covers OSHA law, rigging hardware, rigging math, and more, with a special focus on the hot topic of fall arrest on temporary structures and rigging requirements unique to outdoor stage roof structures and ground support systems.
A graduate of Emerson College (BFA, Performing Arts) and an ETCP Certified Rigger (Arena & Theatre) since its inception in 2005, Ethan is the staff rigger at ALPS, and an ETCP Recognized Trainer. He has taught entertainment rigging throughout the country to a variety of industry individuals, businesses, and labor organizations. Ethan is a voting member of the ESTA Technical Standards Rigging Working Group. He chaired the E1.39 Task Group, which created the first standard recommending proper fall arrest use within the entertainment industry (ANSI E1.39-2015 Entertainment Technology - Selection and Use of Personal Fall Arrest Systems on Portable Structures Used in the Entertainment Industry).
Day Three's after class entertainment will include dinner and bowling, with awards for high and low score. Dinner will be provided at a local restaurant on the evening of Day Four.

Day 5 - Pointman Electric Chain Hoist User Technician Class
Also taught by Elmer Veith, the class will cover general design principles of chain hoists, the evolution of hoist design, and everything an end-user will need to know to safely operate and manage the range of Pointman electric chain hoists. From basic design theory to troubleshooting to annual inspection requirements, the attendee will leave the class ready to manage their own fleet of hoists both in the warehouse and on the road.
