CAPSES 2014 SPRING CONFERENCE

 

2014 Keynote Speaker Tracy Webb  Tracy Webb is a Senior Trial Attorney in charge of the Cyber Crime and Child Abuse Prosecution Division of the Los Angeles City Attorney's office.  She is a career prosecutor who has spent the majority of her career prosecuting child abuse cases, including physical, sexual, exploitation and technologically facilitated crimes against children.  Ms. Webb is an active member of the Federal Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force and co-chair of the Los Angeles County Cyber Crime Task Force.

Keynote Presentation

"What the Tech?  Current Issues in Online Exploitation and Cyber Crime" is an interactive, presentation geared toward parents, educators and anyone who deals with children and teens who use technology.  This interactive and dynamic workshop covers a wide variety of timely topics including Internet predators, social networking sites, digital reputation, geotagging, malware sexting, cyberbullying, technology facilitated crimes against children and emerging issues of human sex trafficking of minors using digital technology.  

Other Sessions:

"CAPSES Governmental Affairs Update"  - Teresa Malekzadeh, Vice Chair of CAPSES Governmental Affairs Committee and Dick Schnetzer, CAPSES Governmentall Affiairs Advisor.   This session will focus on statewide policy and legislative updates with regard to Nonpublic Schools and Agencies.  We will update you on information regarding nonpublic school state certification, an update on the fingerprint requirements that were implemented January 1, 2014 through bill AB 389 (Williams) which requires evidence of fingerprints.  in addition we will discuss the state budget and upcoming legislation including Senator Harkins “Keeping All Students Safe Act” which is a follow up to George Miller’s seclusion and restraint bill.  We will discuss the changes to the repeal of the Hughes Bill and an  Overview including information that the state will be providing to SELPA’s/LEA’s regarding the new behavior intervention requirements and implementation and how SELPA’s throughout the state are adjusting to the changes. 

A Half Century of Special Education: What We Have Achieved and the Challenges We Face– Mr. Fred Weintraub,  a former administrator for the Council for Exceptional Children, in Washington, D.C., currently serves as the federal court appointed monitor for the Los Angeles Unified School District (Chanda Smith v. LAUSD). This session will provide a brief history of special education, the milestones achieved as a result of federal law that provides the right to “a free and appropriate education”, and the challenges we face in present time regarding limitations of funding, changing attitudes and potentials for children with disabilities. Mr. Weintraub also serves currently as the Co-Chair of the Special Education Task Force (with Dr. Carl Cohn, Director of the Urban Leadership Program in Claremont Graduate University's School of Educational Studies),which is focused for 2014 on identifying a vision for how California can best serve special education students. The Task Force will forward its recommendations to the State Board of Education, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and the California Department of Education.

"Parents and Teachers As Allies" - Michael Fay National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)   NAMI California's Parents & Teachers as Allies is an in-service program focusing on helping school professionals and families understand the early warning signs of mental illness in children.  The material includes how best to intervene so that youth with mental health needs are linked with services.  The program discusses how schools can best communicate with families about mental health related concerns.  The program is a great opportunity to meet and learn about your local NAMI resources.  

"Young Story Telling" - Arrowyn Ambrose Husom, president and founder of Story Tribe presents a dynamic creative writing and performance program that connects people to their authentic selves, to one another, and their community through personal narrative.  In this workshop you will be led through an educational as well as experiential journey much like the students at Hillsides Education Center have been taking.  You will get to see firsthand how and why Story Tribe works at addressing not only language arts but character building.  You will play, you will tell stories, you will write, and you will share what you have written.  It’s as simple as that.

"Child Abuse Reporting and Record MaintenanceThis session is designed to help mandated reporters who come in contact with children understand Child Abuse Reporting Law and be aware of their reporting responsibilities regarding child abuse.  Educators, counselors, direct service providers or anyone who comes in contact with chrildren will benefit from this session.  

"Expect Respect" Implementation of Bully Prevention Curriculum in a Young Adult Transition Program" Mary Meehan Taylor, M.Ed., BCBA, Kenneth Johnson, M.S., Misty Merrrifield, M.A., from The Insititute of Effective Education - Bulling has become an epidemic problem currently receiving national attention.  There is a great deal of demand, including California education code requirements, holding schools accountable for reducing these behaviors.  This session will give an overview of the "Expect Respect  "curriculum designed to prevent bullying in schools.  This curriculum is a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) approach that focuses on teaching students proactive strategies to respond to bullying behavior as well as to recognize when their own behavior might be interpreted as bullying by others  This session will report on implementation results of this curriculum at the Urban Skills Center, a school for young adults with special needs in San Diego.  Session components will include video teaching examples and data collection strategies.  It will also include data on student outcomes.  

"New Diagnosis Criteria for Autism"  This session will address recent changes in diagnosis criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in the  DSM-5 and how the criteria differes from  DSM-IV-TR

Training will be offered to Conference Attendees. 

CAPSES IS A CONTINUING EDUCATION PROVIDER (APPROVAL NO. PCE 4813).  As such, several sessions throughout the Spring Conference will allow participants to earn Continuing Education Units.  As the conference date approaches, details on which sessions are available for CE units will be clearly delineated in the Conference Program.  Those sessions can be attended by conference participants who will receive a CEU from during the conference.  Once your fees have been assessed and your session attendance confirmed by the presenter, (through their signature on the form) the CAPSES Office will process each form and mail a CEU attendance certificate to each of those participants.  

As a reminder, below are the calculations for CEU equivalents:  

1 Hour of Instruction = 1 CEU Hour

1 Semester Unit = 15 CEU Hours

1 Quarter Unit - 10 CEU Hours
