Take your playing to the next level!

Drum camp – a drumming extravaganza… Three days of drumming workshops in the beautiful Comox Valley (Royston Community Hall). Learn from expert World Beat instructor Jordan Hanson from the University of Victoria’s School of  Music.

  • You are welcome to mix & match workshops - take as many or as few as you would like.
  • The workshops are open to all levels of playing experience. 
  • Instruments are  provided for all of the workshops, including djembes, krins, bass drums and xylophones.

Workshop Details

Balafon from Mali (Friday 2-4 pm)

Learn new rhythms on African xylophones or "Balafon". These instruments are beautiful and rich in their melodies. Balafons are provided for you.

Drum Rhythms from Mali (Friday 6-8 pm)

Mali is home to the ancient Mande Empire, where djembe playing was born. It is also one of the most musically rich countries in the world. The playing style in Mali is different from the playing style in Guinea or Senegal. In this workshop you will learn a djembe rhythm from Mali, and if there is time, the bass drum parts as well. 

How to Get Great Sound on Your Djembe (Friday 8-9:30 pm)

Do you want to improve your tone & slap notes on djmeb, and really learn to make your drum sing? This workshop will help you out, with tons of tips and easy ways to start sounding great on your djembe drum!

African Xylophone & Drum Ensemble (Sat. 10 am-Noon)

By special request - enjoy learning to play authentic African xylophones. These ancient instruments are the ancestors of the Western concert marimba, and are have a rich tonal quality. In this workshop you will learn a complete piece for both the xylophones and the suppoorting drum ensemble, including an intro, basic patterns, and breaks.

Bass Drum Fever (Sat. 1-3 pm)

It’s all about the bass drums! Each fitted with it’s own metal bell, you play interlocking parts that combine to form a powerful polyrhythm. Develop your rhythmic independence, timing and stick control in this energizing workshop.

Solo Phrases for Djembe (Sat. 3-4:30 pm)

Learn how to play traditional djembe solo phrases that go with the accompaniment drum parts for your rhythms. These are easy to learn using a step-by-step, easy to follow method. Take your playing to the next level!

Krin (Log Drums) (Sun. 1:30-3 pm)

Krin are slit drums made of of hollowed logs, played with sticks. They are dynamic and fun to play! Interlocking rhythmic patterns plus a soloist create rich and beautifully melodic rhythms.

Drum Improv Skills (Sun. 3-4:30 pm)

How to look and sound good on your drum! Everyone wants to sound good on their drum – this special workshop will give you insider tips on how to play well in any situation. Exercises for speed, soloing ideas, and how to play djembe with different styles of music!

Krin & Bass Drums (Sun. 6-8 pm)

In this workshop we will add the dynamic bass drum parts that go with the krin parts learned earlier in the day. Put all together, this rhythm is very powerful and energizing. Not to be missed!!
