Abstract:  The ability for organizations to inspect and adapt to the changing needs of customers is paramount for survival in a world of increasing complexity and technological change. Organizations seek to employ principles and practices that can help manage these changes while focusing on regular demonstrations and delivery of value in short time-boxed cycles. Over the past several years there has been increasing adoption of Agile and scaling across large programs and systems development efforts. With this scaling, organizations begin to experience challenges around the increased need for systems engineering and larger integration and test environments.  These challenges impact an organization’s structure and the working relations across the entire value stream from customer and supplier relationships to product delivery.

 This presentation explores how successful Agile adoption relies upon collaboration across the entire value stream if its fullest potential is to be realized. Questions such as the following will be examined:

• How can organizations reap the benefits Agile methods offer when working in large scale systems environments?
• How can we embrace systems engineering as part of this process?
• How can we work in environments where part of the organization is embracing Agile methods while other parts of the organization are still implementing more traditional practices?
• What are some of the lessons learned for successful Agile adoption in large organizations?

Part of this discussion focuses on these challenges in software-intensive systems environments. Then we will explore new horizons organizations are embracing as they mature and scale their Agile adoption to include hardware, model based systems engineering, and regular system level demonstrations.

BIO:  Dr. Suzette Johnson works for Northrop Grumman Corporation near Baltimore, Maryland. As a Certified Enterprise Coach and Scaled Agile Program Consultant, she has an interest and passion for promoting and implementing Agile engineering in large-scale systems environments. Her initial experience with Agile-related practices began over 15 years ago with product development for a commercial company focused on financial and enterprise management systems.  She has worked on many government programs as a systems engineer and has spent the over 15 years focused on streamlining systems engineering and product development practices. She has led organizations and large programs in their transition from traditional engineering approaches to more Agile and adaptive practices.  Suzette enjoys leading, mentoring, and working with programs, customers, and organizations as they seek to transition to or mature their Agile practices. She has supported many government agencies through Agile coaching and consulting, has delivered over 100 speaking engagements, and has trained and presented Agile principles and practices to over two thousand people. She currently leads Northrop Grumman’s Agile Center of Excellence. She received a Doctorate of Management at the University of Maryland with a dissertation focus on investigating the impact of leadership styles on software project outcomes in traditional and agile engineering environments.
