2020 Washington Modernism Show

Dear Modernism dealer:

This is to invite your participation in the Art Deco Society of Washington’s (ADSW’s) 37th annual Washington DC Modernism Show, October 30 – November 1, 2020. After two virus-thwarted attempts to hold a live show this year we have joined forces with RubyLane.com to hold an online show. The show will be open from 8 AM EDT, Saturday, October 31st through midnight, Sunday, November 1st. Early buyers will have access to the sale beginning at 8 AM EDT Friday, October 30th. We hope to return to a live show at the landmark George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, next Spring while continuing to offer an online show.

In addition to partnering with ADSW, Ruby Lane sponsors online shows with Barnstar Productions, the Brimfield Antique Shows, and others. Ruby Lane is home to roughly 2,000 online antique shops. Its website draws over 1,100,000 unique visitors every month, offering show participants broad exposure to their goods. Ruby Lane’s customer base extends well beyond the United States, with a significant presence in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.

Started in 1983 as the Exposition of Decorative Arts, primarily an Art Deco show, the Washington DC Modernism Show gradually expanded to include other design movements of the 20th Century. It now includes the sale of items from all 20th Century design movements, including Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Art Moderne, Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, and Atomic. The sale will include jewelry, barware, graphic arts, art pottery, glass, World’s Fair memorabilia, furniture, radios, clocks and watches, lamps, vintage fashions, bronzes, and much more.

The online Washington DC Modernism Show expands the reach of the show beyond its normal mid-Atlantic roots to welcome both dealers and customers from around the country and around the world. Participating dealers will sell and ship items from their home locations, eliminating the need to transport stock to Washington. Dealers will also avoid the travel and hotel expenses associated with a live show. And they will stay safe at home.

Cost to participate in the Washington DC Modernism Show is a $60 registration fee plus a 7% commission on sales (The commission is capped at $250 for higher priced items).

Registration is a 2-step process.

  • First, Register with ADSW

 https://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/eventReg?oeidk=a07eh7spw65197d5ec4&oseq=&c=&ch=

This application solicits basic contact information and preferences for the show program. It also offers an optional opportunity to advertise in the show program.

  • Second, Register with Ruby Lane

  https://www.rubylane.com/events/washington-modernism-show-dc/invitation

Within broad guidelines, dealers have considerable flexibility with respect to

  • How and when customers contact them
  • How much is charged for shipping
  • Return policies
  • How many items to offer for sale, up to a limit of 250

Participating dealers must have a Paypal business account. Converting a personal account to a business account is a pretty easy process and will allow Ruby Lane to automatically calculate sales taxes and collect commissions on sales. Participating dealers do not need to have a Ruby Lane shop, but are invited to join Ruby Lane after the show.

For additional information contact me at jimlinz@verizon.net or by phone at 703-568-3745.

While onlne shows are becoming increasingly popular, the Washington DC Modernism Show is the first to focus exclusively on 20th century collectibles. We hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Jim Linz
