2022 Washington DC Modernism Shows

Online at RubyLane.com

Dealer Registration

The Art Deco Society of Washington (ADSW) invites you to join us as an exhibitor in the 39th annual Washington DC Modernism Shows. In 2022, ADSW offers two shows: (1) a live show at the landmark George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Old Town Alexandria and (2) an online show in partnership with RubyLane.com. This is the registration for the online show.

The show will be open from 9 AM Eastern Time, Thursday, April 28, 2022 through 11 AM Eastern Time Monday, May 2, 2022). Admission is free for buyers.

Early buyers will have access to the sale beginning at 11 AM Eastern Time Wednesday, April 27nd for a fee of $20.

About the Show

Started in 1983 as the Exposition of Decorative Arts, primarily an Art Deco show, the Washington DC Modernism Show gradually expanded to include other design movements of the 20th Century. It now includes the sale of items from all 20th Century design movements, including Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Art Moderne, Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, and Atomic. The sale will include jewelry, barware, graphic arts, art pottery, glass, World’s Fair memorabilia, furniture, radios, clocks and watches, lamps, vintage fashion, bronzes, and much more.

Participating dealers will sell and ship items from their home locations, eliminating the need to transport stock to Washington. Dealers also avoid the travel and hotel expenses associated with a live show. And they will stay safe at home.

While online shows are becoming increasingly popular, the Washington DC Modernism Show is the first to focus exclusively on 20th century collectibles.

About Ruby Lane

In addition to partnering with ADSW, Ruby Lane sponsors online shows with Barn Star Productions, the Brimfield Antique Shows, Luxe Events, and others. Ruby Lane’s online platform offers a huge customer base as home to roughly 2,000 online antique shops. Its website draws over 2 million unique visitors every month, offering show participants broad exposure. Ruby Lane’s customer base extends well beyond the United States, with a significant presence in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.

In ADSW’s inaugural online shows on Ruby Lane, thousands of customers searched through more than 5,000 product listings. The shows were extensively promoted on social and print media, including Atomic Ranch, Antique TraderAntiques & the ArtsMid Mod Treasures, and the Journal of Antiques. Similar efforts are planned for the April 2022 show. The show has been expanded from 3 to 5 days.

Cost to Participate

Dealers can participate in the Show and list up to 250 items for sale by paying a $25 registration fee to ADSW.  The dealer will then pay a 10% commission on purchase orders (sales price plus shipping and insurance). The commission is capped at $250 for higher priced items. The commission is collected by Ruby Lane and split between Ruby Lane and ADSW. Ruby Lane collects and pays sales tax on all purchases. No commission is charged on sales taxes.

Antique malls and multi-dealer shops are welcome to participate in the show and offer items for sale by their member dealers.  Ruby Lane collects and pays sales taxes for all purchases so dealers do not have to collect sales taxes.

How do I Register?

Registration is a 2-step process:

First, Register with ADSW

ADSW uses Constant Contact to process dealer registrations and communicate with dealers. The dealer application solicits basic contact information and preferences for the show program. It also offers an optional opportunity to place a display ad in the show program at half-price. Dealers will pay the registration fee and optional advertising fees directly to ADSW.

Upon completion of the ADSW registration, dealers will receive a confirmation email. That email will include a link to Ruby Lane to use in completing the second phase of the registration process.

Second, Register with Ruby Lane

Dealers who have an existing booth (i.e., have participated in a prior online show) or shop (i.e., have an active shop) on Ruby Lane can simply use the link in the confirmation email to log into Ruby Lane and begin or continue listing items for sale in the show. Participating dealers do not need to have a full-time Ruby Lane shop, but may be invited to open a shop after the show.

Within broad guidelines, dealers have considerable flexibility with respect to

 • How and when customers contact them

 • How much is charged for shipping

 • Return policies

 • How many items to offer for sale, up to a limit of 250.

Participating dealers must have a Paypal business account. Converting a personal account to a business account is a pretty easy process and will allow Ruby Lane to automatically calculate sales taxes and collect commissions on sales.

Ruby Lane provides extensive guidance on how to set up a show booth. Here’s a link to the basic guidance for setting up an event booth, adding images and items to your shop, and moving items from your shop to the Modernism Show. Ruby Lane Booth Guidance

If you have trouble registering and setting up your booth on Ruby Lane, Alex Gardner (alex@rubylane.com) is available to help guide you through the process.

Become a Show Advertiser/Sponsor

ADSW prepares a program, distributed both in print and digital form, to accompany each Modernism show. The program is distributed digitally to thousands of customers through ADSW’s Streamlines digital newsletter, posted on ADSW’s Facebook and Instagram pages, and posted on the ADSW and Washington Modernism Show websites. The program, and the contact info you provided, will remain on the websites indefinitely.

In addition to the listing of participating dealers, the Show Program includes display ads from dealers and other show sponsors.

The advertising revenue generated from the show program supports ADSW’s education and preservation missions. There are several levels of support:

  • Diamond -- $1000 – Includes centerfold ad in the show program and special recognition in the show program and website (1 available)
  • Platinum -- $500 – Includes full page ad on the back cover of the show program and special recognition in the show program and website (1 available)
