Interfaith Moral Action on Climate

Fasting In Solidarity with Yeb Sano and  the Philippines

On November 9, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines, killing thousands and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless and without access to food and clean water. Climate scientists around the globe recognize the strength of this storm as a consequence of climate change and predict that more devastating storms can be expected if we do not stop our rampant use of fossil fuels. On November 11, 2013, the United Nations held the first day of the Conference of Parties to UNFCCC, a two week conference on climate change. At the opening, Philippine delegate, Nadarev (Yeb) Sano, pledged to fast for the duration of the conference until real action was made on climate change. In solidarity, the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network and CT Interfaith Power & Light are launching an interfaith, global fast in support of Delegate Sano and the people and inhabitants of the Philippines.

We do so because we believe that urgent action is needed to bring governmental parties to the table at the COP meeting to take decisive action to curb the emission of greenhouse gases that are the main cause of global climate change. We understand this to be one of the greatest moral challenges of our time, for addressing global climate change and safeguarding all creation on Earth is a matter fundamentally central to our respective religious faiths and cultural traditions.

Please join us in this global effort. You can fast for one day or for the duration of the conference. Please feel free to fast in a way that feels appropriate to you.

This action is led by CT Interfaith Power & Light and the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network.  Read the open letter of support here.
