Preventing and Addressing Vicarious Trauma

This webinar will focus on understanding the concept of vicarious trauma--or secondary traumatic stress-- the impact on helpers who are supporting those impacted by trauma. We’ll review definitions, discuss prevention, and talk about what to do when we get overwhelmed.

In this 1.5 hour webinar, participants will learn about vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, as well as their intersection with burnout. We will explore the idea of proactive wellness as well as responsive coping strategies. Alex will highlight not only individual approaches but also school-wide strategies that can be used to foster a healthy environment, where teachers can get support to continue their important work with trauma-affected students."

About the instructor:

Alex Shevrin is a teacher educator through Antioch University New England and Castleton Center for Schools, and an instructor at the  Community College of Vermont. She is a former   school leader at an alternative therapeutic   school, where she supported youth affected by trauma, poverty, and other adverse life experiences. She believes that all students need a safe and caring school environment and that we create this environment through  unconditional positive regard for the person and conditional response to the  behaviors, recognizing the dynamic and complex lives of our students.
