Course Description

At the dusk of cannabis prohibition in Washington state and beyond, this course equips mental health practitioners with the knowledge, awareness, and skills to navigate complex cannabis conversations with clients across culture. Utilizing arts-based inquiry, lecture, case studies, and dyad/group discussions, this course will challenge clinicians to explore their own implicit biases around cannabis, gain insights into the way that cannabis shows up in sessions within legal, ethical, and relational contexts, and consider the sociopolitical aspects of cannabis-informed treatment. 

This CE will include opportunities for arts-based inquiry and processing of critical information, both in small groups and the larger group. In addition, the CE will include case studies with follow-up Q&As in order to assess participant learning.  

Course Objectives

The participant will: 

1. Increase their understanding of the history of cannabis in the US.
2. Gain an understanding of cannabis utilization in Washington state. 
3. Compare various cannabis ingestion methods and products.
4. Discuss the legal and ethical considerations of cannabis-informed treatment.
5. Analyze their implicit biases, attitudes, and beliefs about cannabis, and consider how these may impact therapeutic rapport and treatment planning.  
6. Develop an awareness of the sociopolitical and multicultural contexts of cannabis-informed treatment.   

Course Requirements

All participants are expected to attend the full course in order to receive credit. Participants are required to sign in at the beginning and conclusion of the course and participate fully in the Q&A, directly following the learning activities. 

About the Presenter

Michael Buchert is a board-certified art therapist and mental health counselor, and is on the teaching faculty at Antioch University Seattle. He has worked in community and forensic mental health settings in both New York City and Seattle since 2005, and is the founder of Heart & String Art Psychotherapy, where he works with clients individually and provides individual and group clinical art therapy supervision. In addition, Michael is the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Ritual Cannabis, a sungrown recreational farm in southcentral Washington. Michael specializes in multicultural counseling and therapy, and works primarily with the LGBTQIA+ community. 

Continuing Education Credits

Participants will receive a certificate for 5 Continuing Education (CE) credits approved by the State of Washington for mental health counselors and psychologists within 10 days of the event. Transcripts can also be requested at any time through the National Student Clearinghouse: www.getmytranscript.com

*Workshops offered by Antioch University Seattle are recognized as continuing education activities under the rules adopted by the Washington State Examining Board of Psychology and the Licensed Counselors Advisory Committee.

Cancellation and Refund Policies

Requests for cancellations and requests to withdraw from the course received in writing by noon (12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time) on August 31 will be eligible for a full refund. Requests made by noon (12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time) on September 8, 2019 are eligible for a partial refund totaling $50 USD. Requests made after September 8, 2019 are not eligible for a refund or any portion of a refund.
