Confident Conversations: A Weekend with Doug Braun-Harvey 

Join with other sexuality educators, counselors and therapists at a two-part workshop with international expert on sexual health, Doug Braun-Harvey. Attend the Friday evening event or the Saturday workshop - or come to both! Recently featured on Esther Perel’s Sessions, this weekend is not to be missed!

 

January 31 - An Evening with Doug Braun-Harvey 

Course Description

Join us for an evening with acclaimed author and award-winning sex therapist Doug Braun-Harvey to learn, with other colleagues, an alternative sexual health model for assessing and treating sexual behavior problems. This evening event is an opportunity for case consultation from a leader in the field of sexual health. Participants are encouraged to bring details from their practice for case consultation. This evening event is designed to optimize discussion, dialogue and lively critical thinking regarding the treatment of sexual health and out of control sexual behavior (OCSB).  

Course Objectives

This workshop is appropriate for sexual educators, counselors and therapists. 

The participant will: 

  • Describe clinician’s ethical responsibility when assessing and treating problematic or out of control sexual behaviors.  
  • Identify the six fundamentals of sexual health as the framework to guide vision of sexual health in treating men with OCSB. 
  • Classify areas of clinical vulnerability and common disruptors assessed in the preliminary screening of OCSB initial appointment.  
  • Review the information gathering and treatment elements within the OCSB assessment process.  
  • Discuss a client sexual health plan and it’s role in agreement keeping as an essential component of OCSB group and individual therapy.                      
  • Explain how regulation, attachment and sexual/erotic conflicts disrupt the relationship between deliberative and affective systems leading to OCSB symptoms.

1 CE credit available to licenced Mental Health Professionals and Psychologists. Late arrivals or early departures will NOT receive CE credits. Clinical students can register with instructor permission. Approved for 1 AASECT CE credit.

February 1 - Having Confident Conversations with Your Clients About Sex

Course Description

Certified sex therapist, author, trainer and co-founder of The Harvey Institute, Douglas Braun-Harvey will engage attendees in learning and experiencing multiple tools that prepare therapists to integrate sexual health conversations within their everyday practice.  

Learn how six principles of sexual health provide touchstones for co-constructing sexual health conversations and apply these fundamental tools in individual, couple, family, and group psychotherapy. Improve your treatment outcomes by moving beyond common therapist and client struggles in talking about sexual worries, problems and disorders. Learn to integrate sexual health assessment tools and psychotherapy skills that increase your personal and professional confidence in talking about sex!

Who should Attend?

Designed for clinicians of all levels who want to build their confidence and willingness to initiate and facilitate sexual wellness conversations with their clients.

Course Objectives

This workshop is appropriate for sexual educators, counselors and therapists. 

The participant will: 

1. Discuss current international conceptualizations of sexual health.

2.  Define and summarize six fundamental principles of sexual health.

3. Measure current level of therapist comfort and willingness to engage in sexual health conversations.

4. Identify common therapist and client barriers to sexual health conversation.

5. Explain essential elements of effective psychotherapeutic sexual health conversations.

6. Identify skills that increase confidence and willingness to engage in sexual health discussions in individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy.

7.Choose sexual health conversation skills relevant to therapy for individual, couples and groups as well as intern training and ongoing clinical supervision

8. Formulate client development of a personal vision of their sexual health.

About the Presenter   

Sexual health author, trainer and psychotherapist Douglas Braun-Harvey bridges sexual and mental health and facilitates organizational change. In 2013, Doug Braun-Harvey and Al Killen-Harvey co-founded The Harvey Institute, an international education, training, consulting and supervision service for Improving health care through integration of sexual health. Doug teaches and trains nationally and internationally, linking sexual health principles within drug and alcohol treatment, group psychotherapy, HIV prevention and treatment, and child maltreatment.  

Since 1993, Doug has been developing and implementing a sexual health-based treatment approach for men with out of control sexual behavior (OCSB). Mr. Braun-Harvey is Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Sex Therapy Supervisor and Certified Sex Therapist. He is Adjunct Assistant professor in the Center for Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University and Faculty for The University of Michigan Certificate Program in Human Sexuality.

Course Requirements

All participants are expected to attend the full course in order to receive credit. Participants are required to sign in at the beginning and conclusion of the course and participate fully in the Q&A, directly following the learning activities. 

Continuing Education Credits

For the Friday and Saturday events, participants will receive a certificate for 1 (Friday event) or 6 (Saturday event) Continuing Education (CE) credits approved by the State of Washington for mental health counselors and psychologists within 10 days of the event. Transcripts can also be requested at any time through the National Student Clearinghouse: www.getmytranscript.com

Workshops offered by Antioch University Seattle are recognized as continuing education activities under the rules adopted by the Washington State Examining Board of Psychology ( WAC 246-924-240) and the Licensed Counselors Advisory Committee (WAC 246-809-620).

Cancellation and Refund Policies

Requests for cancellations and requests to withdraw from the course received in writing by noon (12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time) on January 15 will be eligible for a full refund. Requests made by noon (12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time) on January 24, 2019 are eligible for a partial refund totaling $50 USD. Requests made after January 24, 2019 are not eligible for a refund or any portion of a refund.
