 Therapeutic Uses of Improvisation

and Improvised Storytelling (6 CE Credits)

Course Description

This 6 CE credit workshop will ground participants in the process of integrating creative arts therapies into their professional settings. Whether treating clients online or on-site, active strategies promise innovative options. Participants will gain a new perspective on the use of play and particularly on improvisation and improvised storytelling as therapeutic tools that embody, express, reflect, and witness.

Who should Attend?

Designed for clinicians who want to add to their toolbox using improv and embodied movement. This workshop is appropriate for licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed mental health counselors, licensed social workers, and psychologists.

Course Objectives

Engagement by Doing

1. Participants will demonstrate their increase in confidence and proficiency by engaging in scaffolded activities that will fulfill therapeutic purposes.

Expanding Repertoire

2. Participants will demonstrate an openness to play and respectful interaction with others in warm-ups.

Deciphering Social Cues

3. Participants will prepare effective encounter skills in identifying both verbal and nonverbal cues in themselves and others.

Social Interactions

4. Participants will apply skills in using social cues as they demonstrate the utility of improvisation’s “yes, and” in navigating the broader life contexts of interpersonal interactions.

Pretending for Real

5. Participants will demonstrate their ability to decipher social cues and create effective interpersonal communication as improvised role-taking is applied to rehearsal of new behaviors.

Discussion and Reflection

6. Participants will demonstrate their learning through reflecting on and assessing the utility of improvisation and active strategies in their clinical and classroom settings. This is done through group discussion and noting specific ways to integrate what they are learning.
