Understanding addiction as implicit memory, the model presented focuses on treatment based on cause. This new lens will focus on the prevalence of trauma and how this relates to addiction, and the ACE study will be discussed. The workshop will focus on the implicit memory system and its relationship to trauma, attachment, and addiction. Attendees will learn the importance of proper assessment for individuals seeking treatment for addiction.  

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the prevalence and neurobiology of trauma and how that relates to addiction.
  • Participants will learn about the implicit memory system shared by trauma, misattachment, and addiction. 
  • Participants will learn about assessment for individuals seeking treatment for addiction.
  • Participants will learn about the role of prescription medications in treatment for trauma and addiction.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Herb Cohen, LCAT, is certified in both EMDR and Clinical Hypnotherapy. He is an EMDR Consultant and has presented trainings in addiction, assessment, trauma, attachment, and coping skills over the last twenty of his thirty-plus years of practice. Herb has presented live as well as had appearances on both television and radio. Herb has worked in both inpatient as well as outpatient settings before settling in to private practice specializing in trauma, addiction and eating disorders. Herb's private practice is located in Huntington, New York. He is regional Coordinator for the EMDR Long Island Region, as well as Co-Chair of the Long Island Committee on Sexual Abuse and Family Violence.
