This workshop will focus on the defining features of borderline personality disorder and other similar disorders that are characterized by pervasive emotional dysregulation. Validation strategies and skills to build strong working relationships will be emphasized. This workshop will also increase participants' understanding of working with individuals who often present in crisis.

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn the defining features of borderline personality disorder (BPD).
  • Participants will understand the characteristics of emotional dysregulation.
  • Participants will be able to explain the biosocial theory of BPD.
  • Participants will learn how to use validation and relationship effectiveness skills as tools to decrease emotion dysregulation.

About the Presenter


Dr. Kim Lynn Lehnert is the Director and Owner of DBT Psychological Services of Long Island. She has been providing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) since 1995. Dr. Lehnert has completed intensive trainings in DBT and has directed several hospital-based and private practice-based DBT programs. Dr. Lehnert was a national trainer for Behavioral Tech, which specializes in the dissemnation of DBT, and has been providing trainings and workshops since the 1990's. Dr. Lehnert received her PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1997 from Case Western Reserve University and is a New York State licensed Clinical Psychologist.
