In this didactic and experiential workshop, yoga will be defined, as well as how it relates to mental health and overall wellness. Research and evidence-based models will be presented to show effectiveness of these modalities when treating people with trauma, mental health concerns and those in recovery.  Breath work practices, basic standing and sitting poses, and sound will be demonstrated, with an opportunity for attendees to participate. Self-care and the benefits of these modalities for both client and clinician will be discussed.  

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the concept of yoga and increase their knowledge of yoga practices and how to implement these in their work. 
  • Participants will understand the connection between the mind and the body and how to assist their clients in understanding this connection 
  • Participants will learn how to implement the strategies discussed in their daily self-care.

About the Presenter


Raena Pastore, LMSW is a licensed social worker and registered yoga teacher who has combined her passion of the two and created a therapy practice where healking occurs through mind (ie. Traditional therapeutic methods) and body/soul work (ie. Asana, breath work, chakra/energy work). Raena has worked in the field of OPWDD for 17 years. Additionally, Raena has taught yoga classes since 2010, including specialty classes for children, parents and children, family, special needs, and vinyasa. Raena has run workshops and trainings for schools and leads specialty workshops at the Holistic Center where her practice is based, including women’s workshops, gratitude workshops, journaling workshops, energy wellness workshops and parenting workshops. Raena is a mom of 3 and also works full time as a Social Work Care Manager for Suffolk Care Collaborative where she is able to assist clients in obtaining resources, applying for benefits and meeting basic need.
