This workshop will cover a brief history of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in K-12 schools.  The application of SEL in the proactive management of youth mental health during the COVID-19 transition back to school will also be discussed.  Evidence-based curricula will be reviewed as well as mindfulness strategies that can be implemented. Participants will engage in a live demonstration of these mindfulness practices.

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field or with youth.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the origins of SEL and mindfulness strategies in the K-12 classroom
  • Participants will be able to provide a rationale for the use of SEL to enhance learner readiness
  • Participants will be able to facilitate three basic mindfulness practices: belly breathing, mindful walking, guided visualization

About the Presenter

Dr. Anthony Pantaleno is a former School Psychologist of 38 years from the Elwood School District in East Northport, Long Island.  His professional interests include integrative models of outpatient psychotherapy, the assessment and treatment of personality disorders, and school crisis preparedness and intervention. Dr. Pantaleno was the NASP 2013 School Practitioner of the Year, the 2008 NYASP Practitioner of the Year and the 2008 and 2016 Suffolk County Psychological Association Psychologist of the Year. He has co-authored a chapter on mindfulness in the Guide to Cognitive Behavior Therapies:  A Guide for Practitioners (2018) , and a chapter in the book Perspectives on School Crisis:  Reflections From the Field (2018).  Dr. Pantaleno is the former coordinator of the Long Island School Practitioner Action Network (LISPAN) and is certified in Koru Mindfulness.
