Advances in technology along with the availability of and access to the Internet are impacting how behavioral health counseling professionals deliver treatment services and what constitutes typical standards of care. These changes also raise practice issues, such as counselor self-disclosure, boundary crossings and violations, confidentiality, and informed consent. This training will review the current literature regarding new ethical dilemmas related to technology and the Internet and provide guidance and recommendations for both counselors and clinical supervisors. Other issues to be addressed in the workshop include emailing clients, conducting Internet searches on clients and/or supervisees, and conducting client consultations online. Case scenarios will be used to highlight these dilemmas and encourage discussion among participants related to the use of social networking sites and the use of technology in work with clients.

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe how involvement with social network sites may impact therapist self-disclosure.
  • Participants will be able to identify three risks associated with texting/emailing clients.
  • Participants will be able to cite eight of the ten social media policies presented and provide a more in-depth description of one of the policies and how it relates to behavioral health practice.
