This training is designed to better familiarize clinicians with mental health issues in older adults. We will discuss best practices for engaging clients in managing symptoms of mental illness and review tools for evaluation and prevention of suicidality, such as the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and the Stanley-Brown Safety Plan. The training will address challenges for clinicians in working with suicidal clients, explore strategies for overcoming barriers to treatment for older adults with mental health concerns, and examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults’ social and emotional functioning.

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to recognize common myths about aging and mental health and distinguish between various myths about older adults and actual changes with aging and provide examples.
  • Participants will be able to illustrate major mental illnesses in older adults and discuss the typical symptoms of those illnesses.
  • Participants will be able to identify and describe barriers to treatment for the older adult with mental illness, review underlying reasons for these barriers, and assess various strategies for overcoming them.
