Resilience: Starr Commonwealth’s Circle of Courage Model 

Presented by L. Kathryn Hart, MA

 

This workshop will explore use of the Circle of Courage to foster and nurture resilience in our youth. Participants will learn about the 4 universal needs of all humans. We will discuss how to meet those needs within the context of relationships.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to name the 4 universal needs of human beings
  • Participants will understand how meeting these needs fosters resilience

Helping Traumatized Children Heal Through Play Therapy

Presented by Jodi Mullen, PhD

 

This presentation focuses on using a prescriptive approach to play therapy, with the best of both directive and non-directive play therapy approaches for children who have been traumatized. Participants learn about the emotional, behavioral, and psychological markers of developmental trauma, and the special issues these children present in play therapy, including consulting with parents.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify post-traumatic play in play therapy
  • Participants will be able to describe play therapy techniques suitable for children who have been traumatized
  • Participants will be able to describe skills for parent consultation

Understanding Art Development for the purpose of Engaging Children in Expressive Art and Offering Effective Treatment Interventions

Presented by Beth Gonzalez-Dolginko, EdD, LCAT, ATR-BC

 

Reviewing art work with an educated understanding of the stages of typical human development and typical art development will ensure that a clinician has a full picture regarding how to begin and engage in effective treatment and result in good outcomes. Illustrative examples will demonstrate the value of early childhood art and its application to better understanding the art of older children and adolescents. The use of materials and techniques with an understanding of their age-appropriate use will be offered.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will gain a better understanding of the typical development of the preschool child, school-aged children, and adolescents
  • Participants will better understand the typical art of the preschool child, school-aged children, and adolescents
  • Participants will review how to assess this information to develop an effective treatment plan
  • Participants will review how to assess this information to determine the use of materials and techniques with an understanding of their age-appropriate use for effective treatment interventions

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Kathryn Hart, MA is the Senior Trainer and Program Consultant for Starr Commonwealth. In this capacity, Kathy trains throughout North America providing trauma and resilience coaching, consulting and training to agencies and schools as well as program consultation to Starr Commonwealth.  She has dedicated her 28-year career to helping children and families in a variety of capacities. Her experience with youth and family services have encompassed both clinical and administrative roles. She has over 18 years of experience training at Starr Commonwealth in a variety of subjects, including behavior management techniques, trauma and resilience training, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and has been a Certified Trauma Practitioner for 11 years. She has also been a program administrator in public and private residential settings and worked with IT to implement and manage electronic health records organization wide. Kathy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Bowling Green State University and a Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University.  

Jodi Mullen, PhD, LMHC NCC RPT-S CCPT-Master is a professor at SUNY Oswego in the Counseling & Psychological Services Department and the coordinator of the Graduate Certificate Program in Play Therapy. She primarily teaches in the Mental Health Counseling Program. She is the Director of Integrative Counseling Services, with several offices in Central New York.  Dr. Mullen is an international speaker, author, credentialed play therapist and play therapy supervisor.  Dr. Mullen has over 25 years in the field of counseling. She has authored books on play therapy, counseling children and adolescents, grief counseling and parenting. Dr. Mullen was the 2008 recipient of the Key Award for Professional Training & Education through the Association for Play Therapy. She is the proud Momma of Leah & Andrew.

Beth Gonzalez-Golginko, EdD, LCAT, ATR-BC has worked clinically as an art therapist for 47 years, in academia for 28 years and in private practice for 41 years. Beth has worked with children and adults in the areas of psychiatry, addictions, aging, PTSD, chronic illness, special education, developmental disabilities, and child development.

Beth has served on two Boards for the NYS Office of the Professions: Mental Health Practitioners Board and Applied Behavior Analysis Board.
