"50 Year Fight for Equality"
Monday, April 16, 2018
The Housing Rights Center (HRC) is proud to announce the 19th Annual Housing Rights Summit. "50 Year Fight for Equality" is the theme of this year's Summit as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. The conference will feature educational panels with expert speakers on the following topics:
50 Years of Fair Housing: An Overview
April 11, 1968 - Seven days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., this day marked the passing of the historic Fair Housing Act, a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Act. This panel will examine both the progress we have seen in terms of housing discrimination as well as the obstacles we continue to face on a day to day basis.
Changing Immigration Policies: How do we respond?
This panel will provide an update on the federal and state changes to immigration policy that affect our local communities. We will also discuss how we, as service providers, can continue providing safe and effective services to our community members as immigration policy continues to evolve.
Safe and Effective Communication: Law Enforcement and People with Disabilities
People with disabilities make up between a third to one half of all individuals killed by law enforcement and are vastly overrepresented in our nation's prison and jail systems. This panel will examine the criminalization of people with disabilities and discuss action items to improve interactions with law enforcement.
Summit Resource Fair
This year's Summit will also feature an on-site resource fair designed to connect conference guests with public interest law groups, government agencies and nonprofit organizations to learn more about the valuable programs and services available in Los Angeles.
