The annual Legislative Workshop for the Media will preview the 2020 legislative session. This event will take place Thursday, Jan. 9, from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Solomon Blatt Building on the Statehouse grounds in Columbia. Make plans to join your state legislators as they discuss various topics impacting the Palmetto State.
We recommend this event for editors, new and veteran Statehouse reporters, editorial writers, city editors and assignment editors.
The event is a one-stop shop for credentialed media to interview key members of both the House and Senate. Confirmed panelists include: Sens. Thomas C. Alexander (R), Sean M. Bennett (R), Tom Davis (R), Greg Hembree (R), Shane Massey (R), John W. Matthews, Jr. (D), Vincent A. Sheheen (D) and Ross Turner (R); Reps. Rita Allison (R), Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D), Jay Jordan (R), Mandy Powers Norrell (D), Russell L. Ott (D), Tommy Pope (R) and Todd Rutherford (D). More panelists will be added as they are confirmed.
Several topics will be discussed including the budget and spending projections, the revenue windfall, tax reform, education reform/teacher pay and recruitment, Santee Cooper, pension reform, Department of Corrections safety and security, natural disasters and flood mitigation, healthcare, provision of broadband to unserved areas and more.
