Play Therapy Summer Boot Camp

Day 1 & 2- July 28 & 29, 2014 
Child-Centered Play Therapy & Experiential with Children

Description

Participants will be introduced to the entire play therapy process from start to finish, including how to make skilled responses, identifying therapeutic themes and issues, setting limits, responding to questions, and making decisions about termination of sessions. Additionally, participants will learn how to select toys for the playroom and work with parents effectively. This workshop will provide a framework for conducting play therapy in order to begin conducting this work immediately. Day 1 will include didactic information and videotape presentation. Day 2 is play therapy with children. 

Objectives

Day 1: Didactic, 8:30 - 5:30 pm, 7 CEUs

  • Define play therapy, how it works and brings about healing
  • Discuss appropriate toys and play room set-up
  • Differentiate between Non-Directive and Directive Play Therapy

Day 2: Experiential and Supervision with Children, 8:30 - 8:30 pm, 2 CEUs & 1 hour of individual + 6 hours of group supervision

  • Demonstrate process of structuring child-centered play
  • Demonstrate child-centered play session with a child
  • Demonstrate use of tracking and reflecting feelings in play therapy session with a child

Presenter:Jodi Mullen, PhD, LMHC, RPT-S

Certified Professor and Supervisor of Child Psychotherapy and Play therapy.  Director of Integrative Counseling Services, PLLC, in central New York, where she conducts psychotherapy and supervises staff. Associate Professor at State University of NY at Oswego, where she teaches and develops comprehensive syllabi and coordinates the play therapy certificate and mental health counseling programs. Author with J. M. Rickli of various play therapy texts, including “How Play Therapists can Engage Parents & Professionals” (Rev. ed.), 2011.

Day 3 & 4- July 30 & 31, 2014, 8:30 - 4:30 pm
Introduction to Sandtray Play Therapy & Experiential with Children

Description

Participants will identify the various ways in which children utilize the sand to heal. Developmental aspects of using Sandtray with children will be provided. History and critical Sandtray principles will be explored. Building and holding sandtrays will be demonstrated and practiced with children. How adults and children use Sandtray will be discussed.

Objectives

Day 3: Didactic, 8:30 - 4:30 pm, 6 CEUs

  • Discuss the origin of Sandtray Play Therapy
  • State the difference between Sandtray and Sandplay therapy
  • Identify the therapeutic value of Sandtray in play therapy

Day 4: Experiential with Children, 8:30 - 4:30 pm, 2 CEUs & 1 hour individual + 3 hours group supervision hours for RPT

  • Demonstrate the process for creating and holding sandtrays with children and adolescents
  • Analyze the difference between the use of Sandtray for children and adults
  • Demonstrate how to build and hold trays with children ages 8 -12

Founder & Director of Urban Playology in Washington, DC area. She has been providing play therapy to urban youth and families for over eight years.  Certified in Attachment & Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Day 5- August 1, 2014, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Use of Art Activities in Play Therapy

Description

Art is an important tool in understanding and communicating with children. Although often used, it may not be well understood by the play therapist. The history of art therapy as it has evolved over the years will be presented, as well as various ways to incorporate art with different age groups in the play therapy room. The use of art from a developmental perspective and measures for assessing children in treatment using art will also be presented.

Objectives: 4 CEUs & 2 group supervision hours for RPT

  • Discuss the therapeutic use of art in play therapy to include developmental stages of art
  • Demonstrate specific art techniques for expressing feelings
  • Describe neurodevelopmental approaches for traumatic events using art
  • Discuss ethical use of art activities in play therapy

Presenter: Peggy Kolodny, MA, ATR-BC, LCPAT

In private practice in Baltimore where she specializes in trauma work with sexually abused children and adolescents. Recent past president of Maryland Art Therapy Association. On faculty at University of Maryland where she teaches art therapy.  Provides clinical supervision for art therapists. On faculty with CBPS for over 10 years.

Day 6- August 2, 2014, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Non-Directive Play Therapy Techniques for Children and Adolescents & Experiential with Children

Description

A variety of Directive Play Therapy techniques for self-regulation and mindfulness will be presented. Techniques are useful in individual sessions, family sessions, and social skills groups. Techniques and activities will be included for children and adolescents.

Objectives: 4 CEUs & 2 group supervision hours for RPT

  • Differentiate between Non-Directive and Directive Play Therapy Techniques
  • Demonstrate directive techniques used with children and adolescents for various issues
  • Identify techniques for individual, group, and family settings

Cancelation Policy: 

Written cancellation must be received in our office at least ten working days prior to the training. A $25.00 processing fee will be deducted from your refund.  If you do not notify us a minimum of ten business days prior to the training of your intent to cancel, you will not receive a refund or credit.
