A Loving God OR Cosmic Tyrant?:
Understanding the God of the Old Testament and Trusting His Word

It is no secret that God and the Bible are under intense attack today from a number of directions by the New Atheists and others. One line of attack is to challenge the moral character of God, because of His destruction of the Cannanites, an act which is now being called genocide. Another angle of attack is on the reliability of Scripture, with particular attention on the canon of Scripture - that is, how we got our Bible.

These lectures will expose erroneous ideas and provide you with factual history and truth. They will present a fully biblical understanding of the character of God and strengthen your confidence in the Bible and enable you to help others with their questions.

How We Got Our Bible
There is much confusion today about why we have the 66 books found in the Bible and not other possible choices. Why were these particular books recognized as Holy Scripture? Who made that determination? How? Why? These are some of the questions that are commonly asked today and will be addressed in this seminar. These lectures will provide you with factual history and truth that will strengthen your confidence in the Bible and enable you to help others with their questions.

Moral Attacks on the Old Testament
In recent years a growing chorus of voices has arisen to challenge the moral goodness of God in the Old Testament. God has been described by some as a cruel and vindictive figure, a moral monster who arbitrarily orders the death of individuals and the slaughter of entire populations. Such a genocidal God is unworthy of worship by moral, rational people. Those who do worship such a being are thereby programmed for violent, fundamentalist impulses that present a threat to society. But do these charges fit the evidence of the Old Testament? How do believers understand and respond to such allegations? These questions and others will be addressed in order to provide much needed perspective and answers for those seeking to know the truth of the Bible and respond to attacks of the character of God.

Peter Williams

Dr. Peter Williams is the Warden of Tyndale House and a Honorary Senior Lecturer in Biblical Studies at the University of Aberdeen and a lecturer at University of Cambridge.  He earned his M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. at Cambridge University studying ancient languages related to the Bible.  Dr. Williams originally planned to become a Bible translator, but after seeing how many students of the Bible did not recognize its authority, Williams decided to change his professional direction and become an evangelical scholar in order to advance confessional scholarship.
