23 September 2021 DPAAS Meeting

"Potential Air Force ‘Cognitive’ Applications"

We are very pleased to announce that Mr. Jon T. (Tom) Graves (GS-15, AFLCMC/WNY) will be our speaker at the 23 September (Thursday) DPAAS meeting, 11:30-1:30 pm, 2800 Presidential Drive, Holiday Inn, Fairborn, Ohio. Mr. Graves will discuss “Potential Air Force ‘Cognitive’ Applications.”

Abstract: This presentation addresses some of the misunderstanding that surrounds the terms “Cognitive,” “Artificial Intelligence (AI),” “Machine Learning (ML),” and “Augmented Intelligence (also called AI).” It is intended to provide some definition/clarification of how these terms are related and insight into how these concepts may be applied in future Air Force systems. Beginning with brief definitions of the terms, this presentation provides examples of current thinking on how the Air Force can exploit the promises of these technologies to provide solutions that meet the needs of Air Force warfighters.

Tom Graves is the Acquisition Advisor in the Electronic Warfare & Avionics Division of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC/WNY). He provides expert technical advice on acquisition matters – major emphasis on Integrated Capabilities and Development Planning. He entered active duty in 1966 at the Aeronautical Systems Division, WPAFB, Ohio, then became an Air Force civilian in 1970. He served as test and program manager for multiple modification and acquisition programs including YQU-22A, AC-130A/H, HH-53 Pave Low III, Infrared Countermeasures (IRCM), HH-60D, C-12F/C-21A, and C-17. He then served as Deputy Director of the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF)/F-22 System Program Office between 1984 and 1996. Then served as technical/acquisition advisor for and/or led multiple independent review teams including Common Missile Warning System (CMWS), C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP), and Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare System (AIDEWS). Served as the Assistant to the Commander for Special Programs for AFLCMC from 2005 until 2018. Served as capability manager of the Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA) System of Systems, now part of the Agile Combat Support Advanced Capabilities and Strategic Integration team. Also participated in the EW/EMS Superiority ECCT as the Investment Strategy Line of Effort lead.
