What is Social Attention and What’s it got to do with Friendship and Reading and Comprehension and Anxiety?– Michelle Garcia Winner, M.A., CCC-SLP, Saturday Keynote

What is Social Attention and What’s it got to do with Friendship and Reading and  Comprehension and Anxiety?– Michelle Garcia Winner, M.A., CCC-SLP, Saturday Keynote
We will explore three core aspects of social attention; situational attention, perspective taking,  social self-awareness and how these collectively impact a person’s ability to interpret and  respond to information. We will then discuss how anxiety related to transitions or social  anxiety, plays into all of this. We will discuss how all this information impacts which treatments  we would choose to apply to students and how we also predict a student’s ongoing social  learning needs in the future.

Michelle Garcia Winner is an SLP who specializes in students with social cognitive deficits. She runs a clinic, authored numerous books and speaks internationally. Michelle’s goal is to help educators and parents appreciate how social thinking and social skills are an integral part of students academic, vocational and community success. She was honored with a “Congressional Special Recognition Award” in 2008.

Spinning INTO Control: Identifying Triggers and Creating Strategies for Managing Regulation – Denna Gassner, LMSW,  Sunday Keynote

Nothing exhausts and depletes the person with autism more than being unable to        regulate one’s system. In this presentation, we will discuss the emotional, sensory, physical and psychological challenges related to regulation and how we can use schedules, priming and  regulation strategies to limit dysregulation to maximize productivity and personal wellness.

Dena Gassner is a Master’s degreed social worker who provides training and consultation to families in navigating transition needs including Social Security, Vocational Rehabilitation and   Food Stamps. She also helps families whose beloveds are attempting to understand and integrate their diagnosis. She is an award-winning advocate, writer and nationally recognized training specialist who seeks to achieve a life of authenticity not by growing out of her diagnosis but by letting it embrace her.
